Spring Comes to the Front Porch
One must, however, consider the wisdom of these birds in choosing this particular location for their home. How long did Mama and Papa Bird look around for a home? Was Mama drawn in by the beauty of the flowers and the view and foolishly talk Papa into a spot mere inches from the front steps? Did Papa think the fact that it was semi-sheltered from the weather make it secure and safe and not listen when Mama commented that being one stride away from a human's front door could be a concern?
Did these birds checked this place out?
Have they noticed the front door slamming open and shut at all hours of the day? Have they seen the parades of children up and down the front steps? Did they notice the 2 large dogs peering intently out the window, ready to protect the house from all that moves on the outside? Have they watched scooters, skateboards, and BMX bikes whisk along the porch and down the steps . . . or the rail? Do they know that eager and excited children will be banging on the window, peering into the basket, thrilling with the excitement of a tenant on the porch?
I think not.
I watched Mama and Papa all day. Papa seemed incredulous at the commotion and noise and left to watch from a safe distance on the peak of the roof. Mama jolted and jumped and jostled at each new intrusion into her little world.
And finally, at the end of only one long and disturbing day, Mama gathered up her skirts, gave Papa the high sign, and they were out of there. Home abandoned. Relocation begun.
I watched her fly away. I knew what she was thinking.
I called after her, "I understand, Mama Bird! Sometimes you think you'll lose your mind! But it really isn't so bad once you get used to it!"
She never looked back.

Smiles on the Way Home
There are days you can't buy a smile. And then there are days where a smile awaits you around every corner. Little delights, happy surprises, unexpected beauty, bits of grace
.
Today is, of course, one such day, which is exactly why I am blogging about the things that are making me smile.
The first is the fall color.
Yes, it comes every year, but it never ceases to make me catch my breath at the height of the season as I drive by tree after tree in delicious shades of burgundy, mustard, gold, caramel and fiery red.
As if the brilliant colors weren't enough, I pulled into my favorite grocery store and found large, sweet blueberries for $1.78 a box . . . in South Carolina . . . in November!!
I ate an entire container while doing my grocery shopping, giving the cashier quite a shock as she scanned a clear, empty box among my groceries. And gave me odd looks.
Things were definitely getting more cheerful by the minute.
The mailbox offered up a yummy taste of the upcoming holiday.
As is my custom, I will probably not use one recipe or put into place one decorating idea from this magazine. But I will read it from cover to cover and somehow it will seem to me that I have invited "Martha" to my home to help me with the holidays and I will, therefore, be quite fabulous at all holiday endeavors.
To top off my trip home, as I pulled into the driveway and looked down the yards and yards of khaki-coated fence boards, I could see that a neighbor's flower, discontent to stay in her own small yard, had squeezed through the boards and was blooming with all her heart in my own backyard, bringing yet one more smile for the day.
Small gifts to savor. Good gifts.
Pieces of joy. Bits of grace.

The Joy of Polka Dots
How they make my heart a little skippier when I see them.
How they put a smile on my face.
How they make just about anything happier.
So, then, I was delighted when this weekend I found polka dot balloons!
Little pieces of circular joy.
To start out your week with some happiness of your own, here are a few more favorite polka dot pics to put a smile on your face.

Inspired by Spring
Gena escapes to the beach in April!!

Sherry wants those Florida breezes blowing through the house. And Laura wants open windows and fresh air. (Does this look like your front porch??)
Missy is waiting for the campus of Furman to burst with blooms:

For Lori, spring is blooming trees:

Lacey doesn't want to have to constantly bundle up the kids:

And Gerry is sick of bundling up herself. Is this more how you picture yourself in the spring, Gerry : ) ??
MCA can't wait to get to the Cincinnati Zoo.
Serena wants to be out hiking (only I don't think she has a husband and 2 kids . . . don't mean to freak you out there, Serena!):
DoJo just wants the snow to finally melt:
And Jan is ready to see daffodils:

This is a cute one. From Missouri, Anna Marie just doesn't want to have to warm her side of the bed up with an electric mattress pad! How's this as a bed for spring, Anna Marie?
Paggre has a unique spring wish. She's waiting for the fragrance of grapefruit blossoms. Now I've never smelled a grapefruit blossom, as far as I can remember, but doesn't that sound just heavenly? Lucky Floridian.
And finally, since there has to be at least one in a crowd walking to the beat of a different drummer, there's Debra down in Australia. And you know what she's looking forward to in that Land Down Under, down in the southern hemisphere? She can't wait for autumn leaves!

And now may we all cheerfully return to our grey skies, bare trees, and icicles and wait patiently for spring. ::sigh!::
And hopefully, while we're waiting, we'll even find a haunting beauty in the stark chill of winter.

A GRAND Time for GRANDkids
When it comes to giving grandkids a grand time camping, not all grandparents could do as grand a job as these two (sorry . . . I couldn't help myself!!). Actually, not all grandparents would even choose to put up with their grandkids on a camping trip.
But these two have the secret formula.
Choose a gorgeous location. (Mountains of NC are preferred!)

Let the kids do things they don't get to do at home . . . like making fires . . . beautiful, glowing campfires . . . ::sigh::!
Play endless age-appropriate card games . . . everything from Clean Hands/Dirty Feet to Zoomania.
Encourage jumping off high rock formations into deep, cool swimming holes.

Throw in enough dish washing, water hauling, tent folding, and wood gathering that you don't forget you're part of the team.

(Oh, this picture does do me good! Nothing like a strapping 15 year-old boy drying dishes to get the heart palpitating!)

Show the kids that even grandparents can have fun!

Allow lots of independent bike-riding time. (This is another good sanity-saver for grandparents!)

And then fix the bikes when they get back.

Add in a generous amount of the best cousins in the world. And then stir in some blue skies, warm sunshine, and a strong dose of the scent of pine.

This formula results in wonderful memories, appreciation for the out of doors, and a love for camping every time.
Thanks, Mom and Dad!!
